Active Denial System a.k.a. “ray gun”

Wednesday 4 February 2009 - Filed under Life Outside Work

It’s a gun that doesn’t look anything like a gun. It’s a flat-dish antenna that shoots out a 100,000-watt beam at the speed of light, hitting anything in its way with an intense, but harmless, blast of heat.

ZapPainful but harmless. Non-lethal. Officially known as the “Active Denial System”. Possible applications include bloodless crowd control. Unfortunately(?), only US$13 million out of US$400+ billion annual defence budget is spent on the research and manufacturing of the “ADS”. Perhaps it will bring about a paradigm shift in action movies, too: “Engage.” – *No audible effect* – *No visible damage* – “Ouch!!!”

You’ve got to see it to believe it.
